Pangrams With Checkered Histories

Updated 2026-08-09 The vast majority of Spelling Bees use recycled letter sets (as reported HERE for 2025, HERE for 2024 and HERE for 2023), and though different center letters are almost always used, the pangram(s) remain the same. In nearly all instances, recycled letter sets that have multiple pangrams will feature the same set of pangrams in each iteration. But in nine cases of which LexiConnexxions is aware (listed below in reverse chronological order), this has not been the case.

Spelling Bee of 2026-08-09: The letter set for the Bee of 2026-08-09 was A C E H L O T, with center letter H, and two pangrams, CHOCOLATE and ECHOLOCATE. This was the second use of this letter set; the previous use was on 2022-01-22 with center letter O, and the sole pangram was CHOCOLATE, and ECHOLOCATE had been specifically disallowed. Thus, the Bee of 2026-08-09 was the first time in which these two pangrams appeared together, and in fact, ECHOLOCATE made its débuts that day. Spelling Bee of 2026-05-16: The letter set for the Bee of 2026-05-16 was A E H N O P T, with center letter A, and three pangrams, PANTHEON, PHAETON, and PHONATE. This was the third use of this letter set; the previous uses were on 2022-01-04 with center letter H, and 2023-12-26 with center letter O. In both of those earlier puzzles, the sole pangram was PANTHEON, and in both cases, PHAETON, and PHONATE had been specifically disallowed. Thus, the Bee of 2026-05-16 was the first time in which all three pangrams appeared together, and in fact, PHAETON, and PHONATE made their débuts that day. Spelling Bee of 2026-03-22: The letter set for the Bee of 2026-03-22 was A D G H I L N, with center letter A, and three pangrams, GLADHANDING, HANDLING, and HIGHLAND. This was the third use of this letter set; the previous uses were on 2020-12-08 with center letter H, and 2023-08-06 with center letter L. In both of those earlier puzzles, the pangrams were HANDLING and HIGHLAND; GLADHANDING , and in both cases, GLADHANDING had been specifically disallowed.* Thus, the Bee of 2026-03-22 was the first time in which all three pangrams appeared together, and in fact, GLADHANDING made its début that day. * The other word added on 2026-03-22, GLADHAND, had been disallowed from the previous two Bees, plus a third in which it had been possible (2019-06-20).

In all three of those puzzles, the sole pangram was TOPIARY, and in all three cases, PROPITIATORY had been specifically disallowed. Thus, the Bee of 2026-02-07 was the first time in which both pangrams appeared together, and in fact, PROPITIATORY made its début that day.
