Ins & Outs October 2025
In the month of October 2025, 48 words were added to the Bee lexicon, and 2 words were discontinued, for a net gain of 46 words.
Here's a summary of what came and went, along with a few notes about the month’s pangrams (numbers, types, and more), the lengths of the daily word lists, the rates at which the dreaded/adored -ED and -ING suffixes appeared, how often the BINGO characteristic appeared, center letter distribution, the complete list of pangrams and “Ins and Outs” in the month, and more.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR OCTOBER SPELLING BEES
2025-10-01 New record for ratio of pangrams to total word count: The Bee of 2025-10-01 set a new record for the ratio of pangrams to total word count (16.67%). That Bee had an unusually high number of pangrams – five – which was all the more remarkable considering that the total word count for that puzzle was just 30 words. In response to a query about that phenomenon posed in the Spelling Bee forum, LexiConnexxions prepared an analysis of the Spelling Bees that have had the highest ratio of pangrams to word counts. The full report is HERE.
2025-10-22 New pangram that did not generate other new words: The Bee of 2025-10-22 was built on a new pangram TOXICOLOGIC but unlike as in most (all?) such cases, no new words (other than the pangram) were generated for the Bee lexicon. This is the first time that LexiConnexxions has observed this phenomenon.
2025-10-25 Début of pangram previously disallowed: The vast majority of Spelling Bees are built on recycled letter sets. In nearly all instances, recycled letter sets that have multiple pangrams will feature the same set of pangrams in each iteration. But in four cases of which LexiConnexxions is aware, including the Bee of 2025-10-24, this has not been the case. The letter set for the Bee of 2025-10-24 was P D E I M N T, with center letter P, and two pangrams, IMPEDIMENT and PEDIMENT. This Bee was the second use of this particular letter set; the previous use was on 2022-07-13 with center letter M (M D E I N P T) but the only pangram selected for that day’s puzzle was IMPEDIMENT, and in fact, PEDIMENT had been specifically disallowed. So, the Bee of 2025-10-24 was the first time that IMPEDIMENT and PEDIMENT had appeared together, and in fact, PEDIMENT made its début that day.

2025-10-31 Hallowe’en theme: The Spelling Bee of 2025-10-31 had a Hallowe’en theme, with pangrams WITCHING and TWITCHING, and with Beeatrice wearing her little witch hat at every screen except Queen Bee. Thematic Bees are very rare, and have included Valentine’s Day 2022 (pangram VALENTINE, with a little heart over Beeatrice’s crown), and “back to school” (September 2 2025, pangrams SCHOOLBOOK and SCHOOLBOOKS). View Beeatrice’s entire wardrobe of festive chapeaux and headgear HERE.

Of the 31 Bee puzzles this month:
8 (25.810%) were based on pangrams and letter sets that had never been used before. These 8 puzzles introduced 20 new pangrams and added a total of 36 new words to the Bee lexicon, an average of 4.5 new words per puzzle.
23 (74.19%) were based on pangrams and letter sets that had been used before.* These 23 puzzles used 31 recycled pangrams, and added a total of 12 new words to the Bee lexicon, an average of 0.52 new words per puzzle.
* NOTE re: New Pangram Previously Disallowed: The Bee of 2025-10-24 introduced a pangram (PEDIMENT) that had been disallowed the one other time that the letter set had been previously used. The inclusion of a previously-disallowed pangram is very rare, as explained and demonstrated in the LexiConnexxions report "Pangrams Previously Disallowed," which can be read HERE.
Of the 23 puzzles with repeat letter sets and repeat pangrams: 09 letter sets were used for the second time 06 letter sets were used for the third time 06 letter sets were used for the fourth time 02 letter sets were used for the fifth time
