Spelling Bees with Only One Vowel

Updated 2026-07-22 Nearly all the pangrams on which Spelling Bee puzzles are based use two or more vowels (A E I O U), or two vowels plus Y.
A small number of pangrams – just 42 – have only one vowel plus Y (where Y functions as a vowel, not a consonant). These 42 pangrams have been used in 84 Spelling Bees,* as listed below. The distribution of vowels in these one-vowel-plus Y pangrams has been:A – 11 of 42 pangramsE – 4 of 42 pangramsI – 18 of 42 pangramsO – 9 of 42 pangrams
An even smaller number of pangrams – just 30 – have only one vowel (without Y, unless Y functions as a consonant). These 30 pangrams have been used in 46 Bees,* as listed below. The distribution of vowels in these special one-vowel pangrams has been:A – 15 of 30 pangramsE – 2 of 30 pangramsI – 9 of 30 pangramsO – 4 of 30 pangrams
* Most Bees are built on recycled pangrams, with different center letters.
