There were 365 Spelling Bee puzzles in 2025. Here's a summary of words that were added to or removed from the Spelling Bee lexicon; statistics on pangrams; rates at which BINGO, E+D, I+N+G were present, center letter distribution, plus notes of special puzzles, trends, and more.
OBSERVATIONS AND ITEMS OF SPECIAL INTEREST
1. FEWER NEW WORDS ARE BEING ADDED TO THE SPELLING BEE LEXICON

2. THE INTRODUCTION OF LETTER S, THOUGH USED IN ONLY TWO BEES, HAD A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT
In 2025, two Bee puzzles included the letter S, which had until that time always been excluded. (Read details about those two “fabulous” S puzzles HERE.) Of the 508 words added to the Bee lexicon in 2025, 48, or 9.4%, included the letter S. Without those two S puzzles, the number of words added during 2025 would have been 460, which continues the significant downward trend of new word additions, as detailed above. At a time when repetition of pangrams is increasing, and the rate of new words is declining, the continued judicious use of letter S would have a significant positive effect on the Spelling Bee, serving to freshen the Bee lexicon and provide new challenges for its players.

3. SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN USE OF PREVIOUSLY-REJECTED PANGRAMS
About three quarters of all Spelling Bee puzzles are built on recycled letter sets (see details below), and though different center letters are (almost*) always used and solution sets may vary slightly, the pangram(s) remain the same. In nearly all instances, recycled letter sets that have multiple pangrams will feature the same set of pangrams in each iteration. But in five cases of which LexiConnexxions is aware, this has not been the case, and four of those five instances occurred in 2025, as detailed HERE (skip on that page to "Débuts of Pangrams Previously Disallowed").
This marked increase in the acceptance of previously-disallowed pangrams may imply that some sort of systematic reconsideration of pangram acceptability is underway.
In four of the five cases, each of the newly-allowed pangrams had been disallowed once; in the fifth case, the pangram had been disallowed twice prior to being accepted. In 2025, 34 of the new words added to the Bee lexicon had been previously disallowed; this is typical, and roughly aligns with similar numbers for 2024 (38) and 2023 (31). But in 2025, four (11.8%) of these OUT-IN words were these four previously-disallowed pangrams. This is unprecedented in Bee history. * There have been several dozen exact duplicate Bees in the puzzle's history; the last of these was in 2022.

FUN FACT: ALFA had been disallowed from 63 Bees before being selected for the Bee of 2025-02-04. After that sole appearance, ALFA was disallowed the very next time it was possible (2025-03-12) and has been disallowed every time since. This pattern implies a rare editorial error.

The letters I+N+G (suffix -ING) appeared in 63 of 365 puzzles (17.25%) (2024: 52 of 366 puzzles or 14.21%)
The letters E+D (suffix -ED) appeared in 61 of 365 puzzles (16.71%) (2024: 54 of 366 puzzles or 14.76%) Only 14 Spelling Bees have included I+N+G and E+D together, and two of those were in 2025: 2025-10-20 H D E G I N U and 2025-08-23 V D E G H I N

FUN FACT: The Spelling Bee of 2025-07-15 marked the third time that the related words AMEBA AMEBAE AMOEBA AMOEBAE appeared in the same puzzle.

Pangram Surprises
Spelling Bee of 2025-10-01: New record for ratio of pangrams to total word count: The Bee of 2025-10-01 set a new record for the ratio of pangrams to total word count (16.67%). That Bee had an unusually high number of pangrams – five – which was all the more remarkable considering that the total word count for that puzzle was just 30 words. In response to a query about that phenomenon posed in the Spelling Bee forum, LexiConnexxions prepared an analysis of the Spelling Bees that have had the highest ratio of pangrams to word counts. Spelling Bee of 2025-10-22: New pangram that did not generate other new words: The Bee of 2025-10-22 was built on a new pangram TOXICOLOGIC but unlike as in most (all?) such cases when a new pangram is introduced, no new words (other than the pangram) were generated for the Bee lexicon. This is the first time that LexiConnexxions has observed this phenomenon. See also the note at the top of this report about the use of previously-disallowed pangrams.

OTHER ANOMALIES AND SPELLING BEES OF INTEREST
Spelling Bee of 2025-04-01: April Fool’s Day Edition. On April Fool’s Day 2025, the Spelling Bee editor pranked the solving community with a clever trick. About three quarters of all Spelling Bees are repeats of earlier puzzles, using recycled letter sets and pangrams, though with different center letters, thus yielding unique (albeit similar) puzzles. Most players don't notice this repetition because the related puzzles are typically separated by a year or more. On April 1, 2025, however, the Bee used the same letter set and pangram (ECHOING) that had been used in the Bee just a few days earlier, on March 30. The joke, of course, was the meta pun riffing on the meaning of the pangram, which implied an almost exact duplication or return of something. And in retrospect, the pangram on March 31, COMEBACK, was a clue to the repetition on April 1. Sharp-eyed players who reached Genius level on April 1 noticed that Beeatrice donned a new chapeau for the occasion, as shown HERE in the LexiConnexxions gallery of Beeatrice’s different looks.
Spelling Bee of 2025-10-31: Hallowe’en Theme. The Spelling Bee of 2025-10-31 had a Hallowe’en theme, with pangrams WITCHING and TWITCHING, and with Beeatrice wearing her little witch hat at every screen except Queen Bee. Thematic Bees are very rare, and have included Valentine’s Day 2022 (pangram VALENTINE, with a little heart over Beeatrice’s crown), and “back to school” (September 2 2025, pangrams SCHOOLBOOK and SCHOOLBOOKS). Début of Letter S in the Spelling Bee: The letter S, which had never been used in the Spelling Bee since the puzzle’s inception in 2018, appeared in two special Spelling Bees in 2025. The Bee of 2025-03-12 was Spelling Bee #2500, and the occasion was marked by the first-ever inclusion of the letter S, which made possible the pangram FABULOUS.
