Ins & Outs: FLIP-FLOP Words
FLIP-FLOP Words: Spelling Bee words with complex historiesTotal as of 2024-09-15: 8
The Bee giveth, and the Bee taketh away, and sometimes it giveth and taketh away the same words more than once. LexiConnexxions calls these Bee words with complex histories "FLIP-FLOP" words.
Word movements in and out of the Bee lexicon fall into eight categories, as listed here. Five categories are reported in full at the linked pages; the other three categories (shown in bold) are reported in full below.
IN = allowed OUT = disallowed
The INs: IN | Words that have always been accepted (more than 10,000) – See https://www.sbsolver.com/lexicon OUT-IN | Words that have been used after having been earlier disallowed – See the full report HERE. IN-OUT-IN | Words that have been accepted, then disallowed, then allowed again – See the full report HERE. OUT-IN-OUT-IN | Words that have been disallowed, then accepted, then disallowed, then used again. See the full report below.
And the OUTs: IN-OUT | Words that have been disallowed after having appeared in at least one Bee – See the full report HERE. OUT-IN-OUT | Disallowed, allowed, disallowed – See the full report HERE. IN-OUT-IN-OUT | Allowed, disallowed, allowed, disallowed. See the full report below. OUT-IN-OUT-IN-OUT – Disallowed, allowed, disallowed, allowed, disallowed. See the full report below.
All of the words that end up as OUT words are included in the full report of All Discontinued Bee words, HERE.
Only a few Bee words are in the three complex categories that have four or more “ins and outs,” what we might call FLIP-FLOPS.
The numeric codes mirror the OUTS and INS of each category. For example, in the first list of OUT-IN-OUT-IN words, this code 2 / 7 / 1 / x means that a word was disallowed from two Bee puzzles, then allowed into 7 Bees, then disallowed from one Bee, then allowed again, and is in the current lexicon.
